Raku is a volatile and exciting way of firing to low temperatures. The resulting colors, sheens, and finishes are not achievable in other firing environments. We heat the kiln to 1000C over the course of about 45 minutes with the pieces inside before lifting the top off of the kiln, removing the hot pieces with tongs, and placing them under metal pails with combustibles. The atmosphere under these pails reduces the clay and glazes, resulting in vibrant and unique finishes.
The first set of images are glaze tests on little shot glasses, followed by a set of plates and a sake set.
